Studio Releasing New Cut of Justin Bieber Movie

Justin Bieber - Never Say NeverParamount’s Insurge Pictures has announced plans to release a new,“director’s fan cut” ofJustin Bieber: Never Say Never, the 3D concert film and backstory documentary about the 16-year-old pop music sensation.

According to the press release, tickets go on sale Tuesday afternoon forJustin Bieber: Never Say Never Director’s Fan Cut, a new edit of the movie with 40 minutes of unused footage (only available in digital 3D locations).  However, director Jon Chu scooped out 30 minutes from the original cut, which means the runtime is only 10 minutes longer.

The extra clips include new songs, fresh looks at Bieber’s home life, and video of the film’s premieres across the country, giving“fans an even deeper look into Justin’s life.”

The appropriately-titled Never Say Neverwas released on February 11, just days before the lucrative Valentine’s Day rush. The movie managed to gross $29.5 million in its first weekend, good enough for second place at the box office behind the Sandler-Aniston rom-comJust Go With It. (A moment of silence for American cinema…) Thus far, in 11 days, The Biebs has scored $51.4 million for the studio on an initial, low-risk budget of $13M.

Re-releases have been done before (ahem: Star Wars), but an updated version being distributed to locations is an unprecedented move that other studios are likely watching closely. Paramount has essentially found a way to double-dip into the theatrical profits from a small, but loyal fan base.  A successful third weekend could mean more digital re-edits for other die-hard franchises like Spider-Man, Twilight, and the eventual reboot of Twilight.
