Ryan Gosling to Star in 'Logan's Run' Remake

Logan's RunWarner Bros is closing a deal withRyan Goslingto star in the long-gestating remake ofLogan’s Run, an update of the 1976 sci-fi film to be directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson).

Set in a futuristic“utopia,” members of society are put to death at the age of 30 until Logan 5 (Gosling) refuses his mandatory death sentence and goes on the run to survive.

The remake has been kicked around for years at Warner Bros, attracting directors like Bryan Singer, Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) and, most recently, Ridley Scott apprentice Carl Erik Rinsch (who moved on to47 Ronin). Refn’s hire is an inspired choice given the filmmaker’s eye for impressive visuals and affinity for the struggles of man, but unexpected since he has no experience with a studio. However, his vision could also benefit from alackof science fiction in his filmography and the potential for a fresh perspective instead of the usual genre conventions. Alex Garland (28 Days Later) wrote the script for Rinsch before his exit and Refn will work from that framework.

Gosling, 30, is extremely choosy with his roles, so the announcement that he’s starring in a high-profile remake (via Deadline) comes as a pleasant surprise. While he may have found commercial success withThe Notebook, Gosling has been exceptional in indie films likeHalf Nelson,Lars and the Real Girl, and recentlyBlue Valentine.

The duo collaborated last year on the stunt driver and heist thrillerDrive, which we’ve been looking forward to since the duo was hired along with the lovely Carey Mulligan. (For more details, read ourscript review.) That movie is due out in September.
