Hollywood Remaking The Bodyguard, Soapdish

In a town where everything somewhat old is being renewed again, remakes of the 1991 comedy Soapdishand the 1992 dramaThe Bodyguardare headed to the recycling plant.

According toDeadline, Warner Bros is rebooting the hit— which made the studio $411 million worldwide that year (7th largest domestic gross in 1992)— as a potential starring vehicle for another pop singer turned actress. The original, about a bodyguard who protects a popular singer, was the acting debut of Whitney Houston in the early’90s, though the singer only eventually made two other features (Waiting to ExhaleandThe Preacher’s Wife) and a television rendition of Cinderella. The new version will reportedly maintain the concept while updating the titular character to an Iraq War veteran protecting his client in an age of Twitter, Facebook, TMZ, and the like.

No singer is attached at this point, but you’d have to expect emerging actresses Taylor Swift and Rihanna to be on the short list. The former has circled a few projects after appearing briefly inValentine’s Dayand the latter is making her big screen debut inBattleship. Plus possibly Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera and perhaps even Beyonce, who is preparing to work with WB and Clint Eastwood onA Star is Born. They’ll also need to find a young actor to be the bodyguard, originally played by Kevin Costner, so someone contact Channing Tatum.

Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer, whose spec script Family Getawaymade theBlack Listlast year, will write the new version. No word on whether the studio plans to reuse the song“I Will Always Love You.”

Meanwhile, producer Alan Griesman thought it was a good idea to redo showbiz comedySoapdish, which originally starred Robert Downey Jr., Sally Field, Teri Hatcher, Kevin Kline and Whoopi Goldberg, who will probably flip out again about being“erased.” According to theHollywood Reporter, Ben Schwartz will write the script about antics behind the scenes of a soap opera.
